Well, I must say "Thank you" to those who were praying, but unfortunately the qual did not go as I hoped (for me anyway).  For those who looked at the qual from January, you would probably find today's exam just as unintelligible, but for those who understand the language, it turned out to be much harder.  Basically, the first four questions come from specific topics (group theory, ring theory, field theory, and linear algebra, respectively) and the fifth can be from any topic or a mixture of topics in algebra.  On recent quals, this fifth question has been from what is called module theory.  In studying this summer, I focused on everything except linear algebra because I would not have had enough time to learn enough linear to get the question on the exam.  Today's exam, though, had a second linear question as that random fifth question of the exam and no module theory question, so I was automatically at an even greater disadvantage.  Add on top of that the fact that the other questions were even harder than usual, and you can see why I did not do well.  However, I praise God for what I was able to get since nothing came easily this time.

Now I have to continue studying so I can pass it in January.  I guess I'll be learning more linear algebra.

In some starts in July, Kenny Rogers was throwing a linear fastball and a theoretical changeup, and those pitches were getting hit around quite badly when he mixed them with his mislocation of the nonlinear curveball he was trying to throw. However, he has since taken a few classes in nonlinear curveballmatics, and he applied some special theory from that to his fastball, thus allowing him to throw the nonlinear two-seam fastball, and this new combo when applied with a theory of grouping them with his theoretically sub-par changeup (since his fastball isn't very fast anyway, much less so when he throws a two-seamer) caused white sox hitters to crap their pants all night long because they were too busy celebrating their world series victory last year with all kinds of ring theory parades and celebration, and they were not prepared for what Rogers threw tonight. Mark Buehrle clearly would flunk Kenny Rogers qualifying exam at this point based on how he is still stuck in a 2 or 3 month long slump.

Can you tell I'm not happy about the Sox right now?

Hey...  I will be praying for you and your group's prayer life. :)  God just keeps reaffirming to me the importance of prayer.  It's like He wants to keep open communication in his relationships with us or something!    But really... one thing I've noticed is that we usually have to be pretty desperate to pray much... so, I suggest: become desperate.  Isn't it the best place to be?  Wholly dependent and fully relying on Jesus?   After all, He's the Savior... and we're the ones who need saving.

The linear algebra seems completely foreign to me. I'm sad to hear that Lay's linear wasn't very good preparation. God bless.
